San Diego, hope this helps. I'm sure I've forgotten something so
let me know if you have any questions.
Will General League Information: This is a handicap league. If you do not have an established handicap, you need to turn in 3 witnessed scores so one can be established. The handicap is recalculated after each play day. Sandbag scores are not used to adjust handicap. To calculate the initial handicap, add the scores and divide by the number of scores, then multiply by 90 percent. If the scores used were under par, then the handicap is under par. If the scores used were above par, the handicap is a positive number. The league is comprised of 6 teams of 4 players each. Each team should also have a couple of team subs. League is played 5 Saturdays, 2 rounds each play day. On the last day of play there is a play-off of the top 2 places. The winner of the playoff gets a framed certificate and $30 each for their 4 regular players. If there is any Ace Pool money not won, it is given away in a free drawing at the awards ceremony. The team with the most under their handicap each week receives $12 for each of their 4 players. The individual with the most under their handicap each week receives $12. Each week $12 goes into an ace pool. Step-by-step process: Announce the league with schedule and post flyers at the shop. Have a sign-up sheet at the shop and also they can sign-up on-line on the course web page. We contact the previous seasons team captains and find out if they are interested in fielding a team. If this is the first league you've done, look for responsible players that are interested in being team captains. What we found is if you randomly create teams, there is no team loyalty and it's harder to get everyone to show up. With team captains, they pick who they want on their team and you end up with buddies or family teams with much higher team loyalty. Each team captain is responsible for getting 4 regular team players and if possible a couple of team subs. They are also responsible for collecting the $20 a man for the league fee ($80 per team). If they are not able to come up with the minimum of 4 players for the team, they can use the sign-up sheet to fill out their team. As league czar you do your best to get team captains and players that have signed up together. Team subs do not pay a league fee and can play for their team for free. If a team sub shows up wanting to play and the only position available is on another team, then they are charged the standard $2 league sub fee. The sub fees collected help pay for the printing fees associated with the league. Here is a breakdown of the league budget. Entry Fee - 6 teams of 4 players @ $20 each - $480 The weekly payback includes Winning team $48 - Winning individual $6 - Ace pool $12 - Total $66 Typically we give out about 12 certificates per season. 4 for the league winners and hole in ones. This past season we had 4 aces. Other certificates awarded were Most Improved, Best Scratch Round, and Team Spirit. You can also do some gag ones like Whine and Cheese award to anyone that bitches and complains too much. Each play day each team plays 2 rounds against other teams. Your teams handicap scores are up against another team. 2 players from your team pair up with 2 players from your opponents team. The other 2 players from your two teams are on the course on the next hole. We use 3 of the 4 scores each week for each team, throwing out the worst score. This helps if you have a team member that doesnt show and you dont have a sub for them. We use the 4th score as a tie breaker. At the end of the round, the scores are posted and the winners of each team match-up is determined. Take a short lunch break then at a time posted, start round 2. At the end, you calculate the results and pay the team that had the best total handicap score and the best individual score. Pay out the ace money if anyone got one. You update the win/loss records and post all of the results on the web page. At the end of the league, the top 2 places battle it out to determine the winner in the finals. The winning team is presented with $30 and a framed certificate. Because printing nice color certificates is slow, it's best to have the certificates preprinted then just print their names once you know who won. Also all of the other certificates are preprinted since you've already decided who will get the other certificates. I also bring 1 extra hole in one because sometimes there is wise guy that wants to get an ace on the last day. If there is any ace pool money left, we do a free drawing and give it away.
