From TD Rick Bays: The 2003 San Diego Open / Spring Fling was a
huge success. We set out to put on a top notch, memorable
tournament that would be a "don't miss" event for years to
come. The 2003 SD Open was that and more.
We promised a tough course that would test player skills....
Yep! did that! Snapper Pierson designed a 25 hole course which
was fair while very challenging. Smart shot selection, shot
placement, and technical control were rewarded. Three under
par 72 was the best round of the weekend.
We promised killer competition... Yep! had that! Many of the
top players from San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles area,
NorCal and Arizona were in attendance to test their skills
against each other and against the tough course. Word is out,
and the level of competition will be even higher next year.
We promised a sweet payout... Yep! did that! The 2003 SDO
should come out as one of the highest paying B Tiers for the
year. We gave out around $8000.00 in cash and prizes - much
more money than we took in - an approximate 200% payout before
expenses, a 400% payback after expenses! Big kudos to the
tournament committee and all the San Diego locals for
fundraising and sponsorship money that went into our
tournament.
We promised to pay deep into the field... Yep! did that! Pro
divisions paid 45% of entrants, while Am divisions paid 42%.
We promised a smooth event with a big Tourney HQ, tons of
prizes and free give-aways... Yep! did that, too! We received
many compliments from players about how well run and organized
the event was. We gave away nearly a thousand dollars worth of
cool items at the free drawing on Sunday.
Without a doubt, the 2003 San Diego Open / Spring Fling was a
huge success that all the participants will remember for a
long time. If you love disc golf, you don't want to miss next
year's tournament which promises to be even bigger and better.
I'd like to extend my appreciation and thanks to the players
who came to Morley Field, to Snapper for letting us take over
the entire course for a weekend, and to the hard working
committee who did all the brain work and leg work to make this
happen: David Devine, Kent LaGree, Don Olow, Will Phillips,
Snapper Pierson, Mike Slonim, and Glenn Triemstra.

Get your registration in early next year... our waiting list
was 30 players deep BEFORE (and we told at least another dozen
that it was pointless to get on the waiting list.) You
definitely don't want to miss out on being a part of the 2004
San Diego Open.
Rick Bays
From
Snapper: I just wanted to say a short word of
thanks to all who were involved with the Spring Fling San
Diego Open. This was one of the smoother run and more
memorable tourneys I've been involved with over the years. In
large measure due to the great job by the two tournament
directors, Rick Bays and Dave Devine. Rick stepped forward
early on and made a million behind the scenes decisions that
affected both the quality and integrity of the event. He
approached each decision with a calm understanding and a
measured sense of wisdom. Each time I heard how he handled a
delicate situation my belief in his ability to lead
effectively was reaffirmed. Dave was the consummate alter ego,
devil's advocate, what if kind of guy. Always finding a way to
make things better without ruffling anyone feathers. Creative
and brilliant and always with a big smile. Behind the scenes
Will Phillips ran the entire website and was the ever busy
secretary/treasurer in charge of all monies. A thankless and
tireless job, Wilbur is the hardest worker you've never heard
of. Bad feet limit Wilson's playing time to about 1 round per
month here at the course. Next my good buddy Mac who always
comes through for me was in charge of setup both days and
checked all the scorecards for errors. He gave up a trip to
Monterey to be here for this event. My staff did a ton of pre
tourney prep: Aaron Marxsen, #Juan, Fatboy, Chris Nilsen,
Robert Gardiner and Dave Burnham. Also a big thank you to Kent
LaGree who despite many personal trama's in his life always
came through and was a huge help in securing much of the
outside sponsorship for the event. Don Olow who ferried in and
out all the SoCal paraphernalia and all the other guys who
helped with setup: Tom Olson, Sean Olson, Brett Jilson, Dan
Shorkey and all the other volunteers and San Diego Committee
staff members thanks for making this what it was…the best damn
B tier golf tournament period. Snapper
