For the 3rd year running the Spring Fling sold out over a month in
advance. The 95 entrants came from as far away as Las Vegas, Palm
Desert and Ventura. In the end locals prevailed in all divisions of
this SoCal series PDGA “B” tier event. The players won over $4000 in
prizes. We paid out to 39 of the 95 players(41%) in 8 different
categories. In addition to the prizes won we gave out another 30
prizes in the free drawing running the gamut from shirts, hats and
windbreakers to vintage World championship videos. All the players
were fed lunch of Pizza, fruit and salad and each was given a
Lightning #2 Hyser disc, and Innova mini, a cup cozy and a tourney
T-shirt for their entry fees.
Playing conditions were nearly perfect. Light breezes and mid 60’s
with a slight overcast in the early morning burned off to reveal a
perfect day. Mirroring the gorgeous weather there were 3 perfect shots
on the day. Roger Wing in his first ever PDGA tourney aced hole 14
with a horkin’ hyser. Richard Hockaday got the rare skip ace on hole
10 and our tourney Advanced winner William Lister aced hole 18 with
another booming hyser shot.
After lunch our local course champion Micah Dorius was gracious enough
to host a clinic on putting for all the players. After which we had a
“mondo” CTP for everyone. Josh Egbert won an Innova Skillshot basket
for his $1 “mondo” fee.
The tourney is two rounds on a rare closed course here at Morley
Field. The first round was a normal 19 hole layout but for round 2 we
combined holes 1 and 2 to make one difficult hole including a tunnel
mando for the players to deal with. We also combined holes 3 and 4 to
make one long hole there as well forming a 17 hole course for round 2.
We also switched up all the other holes to new pin placements so the
players could experience 2 unique courses for this event.
Each division was contested hotly. Chris Mason in the Advanced leader
group thought his pressure packed 25 footer on his final hole in front
of the crowd was for the win over first round leader Alex Torriente.
Only to find out later that stealth bomber William Lister scorched the
course with a tournament best 43 coming from the second pad and to win
the tourney. William won a $400 portable Mach III donated by the DGA
for his efforts. In the Intermediate division Brandon Langston
overcame a one-stroke deficit to win by 2 strokes over Josh Egbert. He
received an Mach lite portable basket along with a new Innova
competition bag full of discs. In the Novice division Sean Wilburn a
last minute wait list entrant went wire to wire to win by a single
stroke over late charging Chris Bucklund. The Women’s Advanced had
Allison Wylot cruising to a comfortable 4 stroke victory over local
Brittany Breed. While Fia Hedberg slipped by Rita Nash in the
Intermediate Women’s division. The Am master division always a hotly
contested division here saw Mike Kvasnicka win his first major here at
Morley over a trifecta of challengers all 2 strokes back. Mike won an
Innova skillshot basket and some discs. We had 3 Juniors this year.
Tim Thomas the oldest at 15 bested his younger brother and 2nd place
finisher Matthew Miranda. All the Juniors were awarded prizes.
Finally, in the Grandmaster division the only out of town player to
overcome a local Ben Farrington outlasted the always upbeat local Alan
Burke by a 2 stroke margin.
We’d like to thank our sponsors DGA, Innova, Discraft, Lightning and
Millennium Disc Companies. Also Keith Gregori, Dudek Engineering, Palm
Desert Disc Golf Club, Mark Madden Construction and Billy Richards.
Without their generous support the payouts at this tourney wouldn’t be
what they are. Also like to thank staff…Mac, Kent , Donny, D2, D-Nice,
Don and Tommy. Also my shop staff helped a ton…Aaron, Roger, Dan,
Mitch, Josh, Brandon and Steve.
