21st SOUTHWESTERN TEAM DISC GOLF INVITATIONAL
The Team Tourney has a long and rich tradition as a very fun and exciting
event for those fortunate enough to participate. There are always many
smaller stories that thread themselves within the larger tapestry of the
outcome of the event. Ams who beat pro's with far greater credentials,
players who finally beat life long rivals they've never bested before, and
players who've sought to make the team for years and when they finally do
are able to make that next step forward competitively are all common
themes that help make this event unique. After coming off a huge win last
year where San Diego crushed 12-0 in the finals after going undefeated and
unchallenged in the prelims this year San Diego missed the finals by 1
point. With the return of the Redwood Empire team from northern California
signaling a resurgence of competitive spirit in the event several other
teams responded as well. Sylmar returned this year with the full Rico
contingency and salvaged the best remains of a now defunct Oak Grove team.
Huntington Beach guided by team captain Will West skillfully put together
a talented and spirited team top to bottom. Arizona arrived with a very
capable crew as well. When the dust had settled on Sunday Huntington Beach
had their first ever win here at the Team Tourney prevailing 7.5 to 4.5
over a powerful Redwood Empire team.
Team Santa Cruz knowing they were short some of their usual big guns set
their sights on winning the newly created "Spirit of the Event" award. To
that end over half the team shaved their heads in a "Mohawk" and wore
numbered team jerseys while playing. Their efforts were rewarded, as they
became the second recipient of this award. Last year Santa Barbara won
when they all wore matching outlandish Hawaiian shirts and did team cheers
before their rounds.
The competition amongst the teams was the closest it's been in years.
There were a record 4 different rounds, which ended in a 6-6 tie and had
to be broken by going to the individual points scored in each match being
totaled. San Diego lost both their ties. Redwood Empire won 35-33 and
Huntington Beach won 39-38. Redwood Empire also bested Arizona 46-43.
Finally, Las Vegas escaped the cellar this year when they snuck by Santa
Barbara in the 7th round 39-36 in their 6-6 tie.
Rich Dionne and Jim Tobish put on a putting exhibition on Friday night at
the tourney hotel the Inn Suites of North Park. 48 players tested their
skills on the ever tough putting course at the tourney hotel. 5 players
moved on to the finals. Jim and Rich tied again in the finals and had to
go to a third sudden death overtime before Rich hit his third putt from
the 4th station to stage a dramatic win over Jim.
Results:
1-Rich Dionne-$100
2-Jim Tobish-$75
3-Mark Collicot-$50
4-Jay Tome-$40
5-Mike McMahon-$35
