2007 Winners - San Diego

| This year’s team event began with the first winter’s
storm moving into town on Friday the day before we were to begin play.
Complete with strong chilly winds the storm wreaked havoc on our carefully
manicured course. Fortunately we’d prepared for the inevitable pre tourney
storm by cleaning and streamlining all of our drainage channels and the
course quickly drained itself. That plus the addition of four 5’ X 11’ X
½” rubber mats glued onto our 4 slipperiest cement pads helped mitigate
the effects of the wetness. In the first round had no real surprises: San Diego defeated La Mesa 7.5-4.5 Sylmar defeated Huntington Beach 6.5-5.5 Redwood Empire defeated Santa Cruz 7-5 Oregon defeated Arizona 10.5-1.5. The most notable factor about the first match was the wind factor which caused more points to be won with someone taking a bogey rather than someone earning a point with a birdie. The second match showed Redwood’s apparent comfort with the conditions as they again defeated a strong seeded team: RE-8 SM 4 SD handled AZ 7.5-4.5 Oregon Squeaked by LM 6.5-5.5 And SC defeated HB 8-4 At this point we took a break for lunch after which the winds began to diminish and the sun began to peek thru and dry the course out. Round 3 saw Redwood continue it’s dominance over the higher seeded teams by defeating #2 seeded Oregon 7-5 SD defeated HB 7-5 SM over LM 7-5 And SC over AZ 8.5-3.5 Round 4 pitted the undefeated teams of SD over RE 7.5-4.5 SC over LM 8.5-3.5 SM over AZ 9-3 And OR over HB 7-5. On the first day we cram in a 5th competitive round to make 60 competitive holes in a fun filled never let up 8am-5pm golfing marathon. The 5th round saw newly formed LM lose yet another squeaker this time to RE 6.5-5.5. SD over SC 9.5-2.5 Or handled SM 7.5-4.5 and HB defeated AZ7-5. Sunday morning dawned with all the top seeds yet to face each other and decide who was to be in the finals. The weather was back to our normal mid 60’s with light winds. SD defeated SM 7.5-4.5 while RE defeated a revived AZ 7-5. HB defeated LM 9-3 while OR and SC tied 6-6 with SC winning on points 39-36. Round 7 saw SD and OR tie 40-40 SC defeated SM 7-5 RE beat HB 7.5-4.5 and in the battle of the winless LM and AZ tied 6-6 with LM coming out on top 39-33. San Diego then defeated Redwood Empire in a 19 hole final 6.5-5.5 To win for the 19th time in the 26 or 27 year history of this event. The win-loss-tie record for all San Diego players involved is as follows: SD 1-Micah Dorius 4-2-2 2 Carlo Pelg 3-3-2 3 Dave Devine 6-1-1 4 George Spracklen 4-3-1 5 Mike Slonim 7-1 6 Ken Herrod 1-7 7 Miker Ramos 3-5 8 #1 Master Kent LaGree 5-3 9 #2 M Jeff Nichols 4-3-1 10 #3 M Don Olow 3-4-1 11 GM Snapper Pierson 4-3-1 12 W Emily Hardy 6-1-1 LaMesa 1 Richard Hockaday 0-6-1 4 Dave Parnell 2-5 5 Dave Vincent 3-3-1 6 Kevin Gomez 4-2-1 9 #2 Master Ed Speakman 1-3-3 10 #3 M CVK 4-3 11 GM John Kirkland 2-4-1 12 W Allison Wylot 0-5-2 Huntington Beach 1-Dave Roper 2-5 San Diego defeated Redwood Empire in the finals 6.5-5.5 |
