Disc Golf For The PS3 - "Hands On" Review!

We are thrilled to bring you a "hands-on" review of the disc golf section of Sports Champions w/ Move controller for the PS3. As an avid discgolfer and gamer, this reviewer can speak from a knowledge of the sport and it's intricacies and fun factor. In our terms...

Aces: - Graphics - Fun factor - Re-playability - multiple skill levels increase realism (putts dont stick like glue, etc...). - Three tee positions on every hole add great variety

Birdies: - Disc aerodynamics - Gameplay physics - Available throws - hyzers, anhyzers, thumbers, rollers, etc... - Move controller feels at home in disc golfer’s hand - Course design: Fun, varied holes. Elevation shots, water hazards, etc... - Skills challenges (aim, accuracy , distance, etc...) - Ability to add your own personal music during play

Pars: - In essence only one 18 hole course. Need two or three!  (to be fair the Disc Golf section of Sports Champions for the PS3 in one of six sports included in the package. One course with variations is fine/par, we just wished it had more! Can you say “PSN DG DLC ASAP!”?)

 Overall review: CHAINS!

reviewer update as of 9/21: My seven year old and I have continued to enjoy Sports Champions for the PS3, especially the Disc Golf section. With multiple skill level options players of all abilities can compete together in a round of up to four players. We have hosted a few evenings of virtual disc golf for friends both avid and newer players, ALL commenting positively on the fun and relative accuracy in capturing this wonderful sport of ours. The producers of the disc golf segment obviously went the extra mile to include the culture, from the tee signs to the unlockable fly-dye discs. Very cool. If you have a PS3 Sports Champions is A MUST HAVE!

Yet Another (bad) Disc Golf Video Game

o.k. now this is REALLY getting ridiculous… The “long” anticipated Zoo Disc Golf is now available for the Wii. That’s right, you play this HORRIFIC "game" of disc golf as a penguin, meerkat, elephant etc… Words cannot describe the anger over the loss of 1000 Wii points to “purchase” this is WiiWare downloadable game. Even my 7 year old hated it and he likes to stare at blank walls for hours on end.

Save your money for the Playstation 3 Move Controller coming out this fall. It includes a great disc golf game. We’ve seen it, we jumped for joy! ... literally

Note to Mario or Luigui - If you ever want to see Princess Peach again, meet me in the alley behind Saguaro’s Mexican food with my money back. I’m not kidding!

Disc Golf and Surfing For The Wii

Big Beach Sports 2 returns with rugby, cricket, disc golf and football. Players also participate in competitions featuring surfing, canoe, water rocket and dune buggy races in either single player mode or through multiplayer challenges, going head to head with up to four players. Additionally, players can use the Wii Balance Board to ride the waves for a full-body surfing experience. Did you hear that? Finally a surfing game to use the Wii Balanace Board. Our experience tells us to not get our hopes up but hey, its a start! Read reviews of Big Beach Sport 1 here. Watch for Disc Golf on the PS3 soon. Trust us, it will be great!

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 Returns To Disc Golf

...and this time you can against your friends online! Thant’s right. Now Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 for the Wii will offer simultaneous online play with up to four people. Check back here at for the first ever virtual disc golf tournament coming this summer!

The game will be available June 8th for $49.99 (mistresses sold separately).

Disc Golf...Yeah, There’s Another App For That

Attempts at Disc Golf Video games miss as bad as this writers putts, but every once in a while one actually goes in the basket. This past year saw many Disc Golf video games released for the Wii as well as a few Disc Golf “apps” released for the iPhone/iTouch. Recently a new Disc Golf game, iDiscgolf PRO for these devices was released and to the surprise of many (including myself), it’s actually very fun. Only one course is available at launch, lets hope for more soon. You'll be hard pressed to find a better Disc Golf game at only $1.99. A- [youtube=]

On a related note... this editor recently received his long awaited iPhone only to find out that you can not purchase insurance for it through AT&T as you can for other cell phones through your carrier ($5 per month, etc...). Some digging online found that State Farm will insure iPhones / Blackberrys, etc... through a "Personal Articles Policy". $30 per year, replacement cost, no deductible. The only policy that came close was through Safeguard which was $99 per year, no theft or damage replacement (basically an extended warranty). For questions regarding this policy we spoke to State Farm agent Caylyn Kraud at 858 451-0010.

Watch What You Wish For... might just get it. This time last year we had no disc golf video games. Thanks to the Nintendo Wii, as of 7/26/09 we now have five. The majority of them are mediocre at best, but two are definitely worth the purchase (Tiger Woods and Wii Sports Resort also include the Wii Motion Plus adapter).

This Editors "Hands On" Ratings: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 - 9.5 Wii Sports Resort - 9.0 Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz - 6.0 Beach Sports - 5.0 Vacation Sports - 4.0

Another Disc Golf Video Game?

ok... along with Tiger Woods 10, this makes number five (see our reviews).
Most Wii owners began their foray into motion controlled videogaming with Wii sports (the pack-in with brand new Wii's). Now comes Wii Sports Resort. This time around there are more in depth games including canoeing, skydiving, jet skiing, sword-fighting, wake boarding, archery etc... This new release is mainly to showcase the new Wii Motion Plus adapter. This new adapter allows a full 360 range of on screen motion. This was first implemented a few months ago with the Tiger Woods 10 for the Wii release.
The "Frisbee" section of the game includes a distance and accuracy challenge (with a mii dog) as well as a "Frisbee Golf" variation. Played on the same 18 hole course as the ball golf portion of the game with one minor change. Instead of a basket you throw through a cylindrical beam that rises from the ground. In this manner all you need to do is break the plane of the beam to "hole out". Is this the future of disc golf?... laser beams?
The good news is that the adapter comes packed in with the game for $49.99. This package is well worth the cost. This game / adapter package will be released on July 26th.

Disc Golf For The Wii!

Editors Review -tiger-woods-pga-tour-10-wiiThis is a must have for and disc golf / Wii owner. You can play on 16 realistic golf courses - Pebble Beach, Doral, and even Torrey Pines!; to name a few (Torrey Pines must be unlocked during the ball golf section of the game...bummer). Do not buy this without the new Wii FullMotion control adapter. This new tecnology from Nintendo allows full 360 degree range of motion. This allows hyzer, anhyzer, rollers etc.... Save some money buy purchasing the bundle of game and adapter.

The game also adds realism through real-time weather. Your internet connected Wii will access the local weather in your area and incorporate those conditions into your round. This definitely makes a difference. There are a lot of cool features like that that make this a must have video game.

Putting is a little too easy and many birdies are to be had but you will agree to the standards after playing a few rounds. Overall rating (disc and that silly ball golf game) we'll give it a 9.5. The ONLY issue aside from not being able to play all the course at the start, which stop it from receiving a 10 is that the Wii graphics are good but not great (as expected on this limited platform).

Graphics - 9 Control - 10 Fun Factor - 10 Difficulty - Normal (6 year old beat me by 2 strokes disc golfing at Pebble Beach) Players - Up to four at one time Discs - Three: Driver, midrange, putter Playing disc golf at Torrey Pines... priceless!

editors note - Thanks to Tiger Woods for puting his name behind our sport. Thanks (sarcastically) to Tiger Woods for the upcoming throngs of crowds to the already overloaded Morley Course and parking. lol

Disc Golf Video Games

We have all heard the rumors, and seen the "meeting minutes" from the PDGA meetings about a disc golf video game. The odds of this happening in our lifetime are 50/50 but we are not left in the cold. There are actually 3 disc golf games for the Nintendo Wii. Well, not actually a standalone disc golf game, but disc golf in a collection of other sports games - Beach Sports, Vacation Sports and Super Monkey Ball. Luckily none of the games are more than $20 and if you have a child, niece / nephew etc... the other games included make it work your hard earned "discretionary funds". None of the titles are very realistic and you will probably feel more embarrassed caught playing the Wii on these titles but hey... "beggars can't be choosers". Let start with the first one released: Beach Sports.big20beach20sports20wii Cutesy, mii type characters, sidearm / forehand / Tomahawk throws, "Driver" / Midrange / Putter discs,  wind affects the throws, 18 holes (with one Windmill hole!). Also includes Volleyball, beach football, cricket, soccer and boccie ball. Online reviews - 4 stars out of 10, this reviewer... this is the funnest and most "realistic" (comparatively) of the 3 but VERY wii-ish, ok graphics, with the other games included, give it a 5 out of 10.

Most recent release: Vacation Sports008888175124f Includes the best looking (comparatively) game but only 9 holes (on a golf course interestingly enough). No sidearm, tomahawk, drivers etc. This game does though allow you to use a hyzer / anhyzer type throw using a 3-D aiming system. Could have been the best in the bunch if it had more holes. Other games include cricket (again!), boccie ball (again!), dodgeball, air hockey, foosball, go-carts and darts. Online reviews - 3 stars out of 10, this reviewer... fun for a while, could have been the best one, ok graphics, lame premise, with the other games included, give it a 4 out of 10.

Lastly: Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitzsuper_monkey_ball_banana_blitz After all is said and done this will be the one you will continue to play after the whole "disc golf on the wii" honeymoon is over. The dsiv golf portion is challenging but a little funk to control. In addition your character is a baby monkey! If you can choke down playing disc golf as a monkey the you and you family or friends will enjoy this one the most overall. The actual game "Super Monkey Ball" game is very fun. Disc golf and other mini games make it the best value in the long run. Online reviews avg. 7.5 out of 10. This reviewer gives it 7 out of 10.

Have fun playing disc golf (kinda...) on the wii. If you don't tell anyone, we won't.
