North vs. South San Diego Disc Golf Battle

Congratulation to Team South County for their victory. It was a much tighter match than last year. It ended up no surprise that both teams won on their home courses, but the South's dominance at Sun Valley carried the weekend. Congratulations to Team North County for charging back and nearly erasing a 14-point deficit coming into the final day. Thank you to Daniel Lichtman, Allen Risley, and all those who committed their weekend to this great event.

Keen Disc Golf Shoe Review: Round Five

Round Five – 12/15/2009Finished my fifth round of disc golf today with the Keen Milo’s. I find them to be very comfortable. There was no pronounced break-in period for me. We actually had some weather this weekend and they held up nicely. Great grip on the wet cement and rubber tee pads. Decent grip walking up slippery, muddy hills. Kept my feet dry while playing in the rain and walking through many large puddles. Toe box is nice and sturdy, My opinion at this point is very positive. It ‘s hard to compare to other Keens, Merrills, Salomons, etc as these do not seem to be made as a similar hiking or trail shoe. The side and top panels of the shoes are made from a soft nylon-like material. Though this adds to the comfort, I’m not sure how they would prevail in a rougher terrain. I could see heavy brush, jagged sticks or rocks may push the limited protection above the soles. Again this shoe is not a hiking shoe so this is probably intentionally designed.

I believe the true value in these shoes will be determined in the long run in their durability. Will the toe box and sole hold up to their task? At $110 they are above the average price for many disc golfers shoe budget. These shoes are getting some flack online for durability. We will have to keep an eye on that. At this point I give them an B. I wish they came in colors other than Gargoyle/Drizzle though I do give them credit for those creative color names. Much better than Gray/Dark Gray.

"The Rebound From The Beatdown"

Team San Diego redeemed themselves from last years disappointing finish in this past weekends 29th Annual Southwestern Team Invitational Disc Golf Tournament. Team leader Micah Dorius went 7-0 to lead San Diego into the finals against Team Huntington Beach. George Spracklen shut the door for a victory with an Ace on Hole 2 - long in his final hole of play (92!). Congrats to all team San Diego Micah Dorius, Chris Villmorin, George Spracklen, Carlo Pelg, Dave Devine, Mike Slonim, Snapper Pierson and Emily Hardy. Special congrats go out to the four (that's a lot!) rookies who more than held their own in the grueling weekend of play... Josh Damron, Luke Christensen, Daniel Lichtman and Mike Westerman.

editors "hands-on" review: Day One – very comfortable straight out of the box. Light. Good fit per size ordered, may even be a little extra in the width (which most men need). Not sure what the Anti-Bunch Asymmetrical Flex Lace System is but despite its funny (off-center/wonky) look, it seems to distribute the lacing tightness over the whole length of the top of the shoe. I find it to be very comfortable design feature. It did though draw three strange looks this morning while shopping at Target. It will be a while to report on wear and tear as the harshest conditions we experience in SoCal is when the grounds crew at our course over waters a smidge. We’ll provide you with first round, fifth round and tenth round impressions in the next few weeks.

Youth Disc Golf Association

Odd's are you have seen the YDGA's  red, white, or blue shirts around Morley Field recently. This organization is the brainchild of local disc golfers Scott Lebrick, Brendan Sage and Carl Renda. In the past year they have done a great job promoting disc golf to youth in San Diego County through clinics at Montiel Park in San Marcos as well as schools in the Poway, San Diego and Point Loma area.

The YDGA was the recent recipient of a $500 check from Allstate Insurance through it's "Hands In The Community" program. Allstate agent Ron Tocki was the agent presenting the check. He has been a recent sponsor at "Spring Flings".

Good luck YDGA!

Disc Golf... Yeah, There's An App For That

Bag Tags #1 and #2 Spotted At Morley

Contrary to popular speculation, San Diego Aces bag tags #1 and #2 are not sealed away in an airtight vault. In "random" happenstance, Micah Dorius (who earned tag #1 with his win at the 2010 Course Championship) ran into the ever-youthful Dave Butcher early Monday morning at Morley Field. The crowd (of 5) gasped as the prestigious black tags seemingly levitated into the air above the challengers bags. In a fun early morning round, Micah defended #1 and Dave kept #2. All is well with the world.

"Grinders" To Begin For Team San Diego

The recent Course Championship holds additional importance for the role it plays in earning players a spot on the San Diego Team for the Southwestern Team Championship Tournament, held every December at Morley.  Qualifying for the team so far, based on their performance in the Course Championship Tournament or monthly tournaments are the following players:  Micah Dorius, Chris Vilmorin, Carlo Pelg and George Spracklin in the Open division;  Dave Devine, Snapper Pierson and Mike Slonim in the Masters and Grandmasters Division, and Emily Hardy for the Women’s Division.  The three remaining Open spots and one remaining Masters spots will be filled through a series of head-to-head elimination matches, referred to affectionately as “the grinder.”  Players competing in the grinder are expected Playoffsto include:  Josh Damron, Josh Egbert, Angel Garcia, Mark Jarvis, Mike Lust, Kevin Gomez, Jeremiah, Willie Lister,  Alex Torriente, Luke, Aubrey Daniels and Donny Olow for the Open spots.  The last Masters spot will be up for grabs by John Heaton, CVK, Jeff Nichols, Kent La Gree or Greg Olsen.

Chris Vilmoran aced hole 2 in the finals. This makes the 2nd year in a row we had an ace in the final 9. The setup in the second round on Saturday was as tough as it gets a Morley. All long pin positions and all long pads with 2 pin positions never seen in regular play (hole 6 on street and hole 12 back right). No player went bogey free on second course. Mike Slonim (top finishing master age player) had only 1 bogey though. Micah had best score in each round -12,-6,-14 and -4 in final 9.

Bag Tag Melee Results

mikeb17 SD Aces members showed up early Sunday morning ready to put their tags on the line, with Angel Garcia bringing in the low tag #16.  It was a perfect day to play disc golf with clear skies, no wind, and warm Socal weather. While the Chargers were on TV running over the Chiefs, the course opened up and lines were very short allowing a steady pace round.  It was Mike B. who ended up shooting an impressive -10, taking the Winner spot and selecting a custom stamped 2009 Sun Valley Star Boss from the grab bag prizes donated to the Aces by its members.  Grace Rivas, San Diego Aces newest member, signed up this morning for a 2009 membership to play in the challenge and ending up winning a custom Tie-Dye stamped 2009 End of the Trail Classic Avenger SS from the $1 raffle.  What a great reward for becoming a member! Morley Player Profile: Emily Hardy

PDGA#  26129

Division  Open Women

Sponsor: Baskethead Disc Golf

Began Playing Disc Golf:

I played competitive Ultimate frisbee for about 8 years before I discovered disc golf. I moved up to Lake Tahoe in 2001 for the winter season, and there was no ultimate team at the time.  So I decided to try disc golf. I showed up by myself at the Zephyr Cove course with one disc, no map, and no clue about how to play.  Lucky for me, some locals rolled up and kindly offered for me to join them. I'm so glad I did! Started playing tournaments in 2005.

First Disc:

It was a tie dye Stratus, which I still have. It's so beat that its even understable at the Mountain High course.

Favorite Hole at Morley:

7, because there are no "gimme" birdie positions on this hole.

Morley Field Aces:

3: 14 C (star starfire),  15 C (my first ace ever- z predator), 16 A (x comet).

Favorite Disc:

The Z Buzzz is the best! You can throw it hard, it's fast, and it's stable. If I could only play with one disc, the Buzzz would be it.

Favorite Drivers:

Predator for overstable/windy conditions, Rogue for distance

Favorite Midranges:

Buzzz, Comet

Favorite Putter:

FLX Challenger--only the goldie will do!

In My Bag: not a whole lot-- mastering a few discs is easier than lugging around 20!

FLX Challenger

Z Buzzz

Y Comet

2-3 Rogues (various stability)

Z Predator

Pro Destroyer

Tourney wins and / or Top 5 finishes (not necessarily from Morley):

07 Worlds, 2nd in Mixed Doubles

06 & 07 So Cal Championships, 1st,  Pro Women

06, U.S. Women's Championships, 8th, Pro Women

07, Golden State Classic, 3rd, Pro Women

Favorite Disc Golf Website:

discgolfersr.us   It's like Facebook, but just for disc golf.

Favorite Pro Player:

Valerie Jenkins-- She's the top woman player in the world! She can throw it a mile and putt, too. Val is also really humble and friendly with everybody she plays with.  Val is great role model for younger players and an awesome ambassador for disc golf.

Tips for newer players and players looking to improve:

Go out to a field and practice.  Too many new players just go to Morley and think they'll get better automatically.  If you want to best, fastest way to improve, get out to a park. Pick a particular skill that you want to work on, such as your grip, follow through, or keeping the disc low. Bring all of your discs and focus on just that skill.  You don't have to worry about errant shots or taking too long.  You'll see your game improve dramatically!
